ORIGINAL ARTICLES - Skeletonizing En Bloc Esophagectomy for Cancer - Skeletonizing en-bloc esophagectomy (SEBE) made flush with the anatomical structures adjacent to the esophagus was feasible in 235 of the 324 patients in whom it was attempted (73%). Five-year survival including in-hospital deaths (5%) was 35% in the whole series, 49% after SEBE, and 0% after palliative resection. Five-year survival after SEBE was 64% for intramural tumors versus 34% for extramural neoplastic processes (P < .0001), and it was 43% for patients with < 5 metastatic nodes versus 11 % for those with involvement of >= 5 nodes (P = .0001)./
