Clinical Studies - 2000 Volvo Award Winner in Clinical Studies - Lumbar High-Intensity Zone and Discography in Subjects Without Low Back Problems - Patients with low back pain and those without were studied with magnetic resonance imaging and discography. The presence of a high-intensity zone, anular disruption, and positive discographic pain then were compared between the two groups. A high-intensity zone was found in 25% of asymptomatic subjects, and 70% of high-intensity zone discs were painful on disc injection. The presence of a high-intensity zone does not reliably indicate the presence of symptomatic internal disc disruption. Although the prevalence of a high-intensity zone was greater in symptomatic patients, the finding of a high-intensity zone in asymptomatic patients is too frequent for this factor to be of meaningful clinical use./
