Clinical Studies - Provocative Discography in Patients After Limited Lumbar Discectomy: A Controlled, Randomized Study of Pain Response in Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Subjects - In this study, 20 asymptomatic volunteers who bad experienced posterior lumbar discectomy at least 2 years previously were recruited for experimental three-level lumbar discography. A control group of 27 symptomatic patients, after single-level discectomy with intractable low back pain syndrome, also underwent discography in a blinded study. Injection of discs previously treated with surgery provoked significant pain in 40% of the asymptomatic subjects and 70% of the symptomatic subjects. Abnormal psychometric scores predicted increased pain with disc injection in the symptomatic group./
