Occupational Health/Ergonomics - The In Vivo Dynamic Response of the Human Spine to Rapid Lateral Bend Perturbation: Effects of Preload and Step Input Magnitude - In this study, 13 men experienced lateral bend step inputs comprising 20% or 30% of their maximum lateral bend moment while sustaining isometric preloads of 5% or 15%. Higher levels of preactivation attenuated lateral flexion. When preactivation was low, the antagonistic muscles demonstrated more pronounced responses to added loads. Large multisegmental muscles appear to make a significant contribution to spinal stability./
