SCIENTIFIC PAPERS - Does Prophylactic Octreotide Decrease the Rates of Pancreatic Fistula and Other Complications After Pancreaticoduodenectomy? Results of a Prospective Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial - This prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled single-institution trial evaluated the role of prophylactic octreotide in altering morbidity and mortality after pancreaticoduodenectomy. The trial evaluated 211 patients, half of whom received octreotide and the other half a saline placebo. The postoperative morbidity, mortality, and length of hospital stay were similar between the groups. These data indicate that prophylactic octreotide does not reduce the incidence of complications after pancreaticoduodenectomy/
