ORIGINAL ARTICLES - Phospholipase A2 Isoforms in Acute Pancreatitis - Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) group II and IV are important inflammatory mediators in many conditions, including severe acute pancreatitis. However, the exact source of PLA2 in severe acute pancreatitis is not known, and it is believed that PLA2 is derived mainly from inflammatory cells. The authors report that the pancreas itself is a major source of PLA2 group II and IV in severe human and experimental acute pancreatitis, thereby suggesting that pancreatic acinar and ductal cells are major contributors to the immune cell independent inflammation of severe acute pancreatitis./
