FEATURES - Helping Hands - Exploring the Cultural Implications of Social Support During Pregnancy - In this excerpt from "Social Support for Pregnant & Postpartum Women," the latest addition in the AWHONN Symposia series of monographs addressing critical issues in nursing, current and prevailing knowledge regarding the importance of social support, the cultural implications involved, the instruments used to measure social support and the necessary nursing interventions are discussed. The following deals strictly with the cultural aspects of social support in pregnancy. Pregnancy is a time of profound physiologic change as a woman's body nurtures her growing fetus and prepares for birth. Psychosocial changes occur during this time as well. Women undergo a grief process as they give up or rearrange some old parts of their life in order to focus intensely on the baby and mothering.
