Randomized Trials - Prospective Randomization of Parenteral Hyperalimentation for Long Fusions With Spinal Deformity: Its Effect on Complications and Recovery From Postoperative Malnutrition - Total parenteral nutrition was administered in a prospective, randomized fashion to 46 patients undergoing long spinal fusions. Despite the absence of statistical reduction in complications, patients who received total parenteral nutrition had less nutritional depletion and a more rapid return to preoperative nutritional status than those who did not receive such nutrition. Patients who underwent staged circumferential reconstructions with the administration of total parenteral nutrition experienced less nutritional depletion and a lower complication rate than patients undergoing same-day reconstructions with or without total parenteral nutrition./
