Synthesis of Poly(chloromethylstyrene-b-styrene) Block Copolymers by Controlled Free-Radical Polymerization - Published online 8 September 2000 The controlled free-radical polymerization of styrene and chloromethylstyrene monomers in the presence of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl- 1-piperidinyloxyl (TEMPO) has been studied with the aim of synthesizing block copolymers with well-defined structures. Unexpectedly, for chloromethylstyrene the rate of the TEMPO-mediated polymerization was higher than the rate of the thermal self-initiated polymerization. The kinetic modeling of the block copolymerization was in good agreement with experimental data. The block copolymers obtained in this work exhibited a low polydispersity index (weight-average molecular weight/number-average molecular weight < 1.5) and could be chemically modified with nucleophilic substitution reactions on the benzylic site, opening the way to a great variety of architectures./

The Influence of RAFT on the Rates and Molecular Weight Distributions of Styrene in Seeded Emulsion Polymerizations - Published online 8 September 2000 Seeded emulsion polymerizations of styrene in the presence of two reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) agents were studied. We designed the seed to be small to observe the effects of exit, and we made the seed of poly(methyl methacrylate) so that the molecular weight distributions of poly(styrene) by gel permeation chromatography could be obtained independently by UV detection. The rates were significantly retarded by the presence of a RAFT agent, with the retardation being greater with an EMA RAFR agent (2-(ethoxycarbonyl)propyl-2-yl dithiobenzoate) than with a cumyl RAFT agent (2-phenylprop-2-yl dithiobenzoate). We propose that exit from the particles after fragmentation was the main cause of retardation./

Influence of the Stereochemical Configuration on the Radical Polymerization of Methacrylic Monomers: cis- and trans-(2-Cyclohexyl-1,3-dioxan-5-yl) Methacrylates - Published online 8 September 2000 The synthesis of two new isomeric monomers, cis-(2-cyclohexyl-1,3-dioxan-5-yl) methacrylate (CCDM) and trans-(2-cyclohexyl-1,3-dioxan-5-yl) methacrylate (TCDM), is reported. The radical polymerizations of both monomers were studied to investigate the influence of the monomer configuration on the values of the propagation and termination rate constants (kp and k1). Measurements of the absolute rate constants kp and k1 were carried out with electron paramagnetic resonance techniques. The values of kp at 60 (degree)C were nearly identical for both trans and cis monomers, but the termination rate constant of the trans monomer was about three times that of the cis monomer at the same temperature./

Synthesis and Characterization of Organosoluble Copolyimides Based on 2,2-Bis(4-(4-aminophenoxy)-phenyl)propane, 2,2-Bis(4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl)-hexafluoropropane and a Pair of Commercial Aromatic Dianhydrides - Published online 20 September 2000 Organosoluble polyimides and alternating copolyimides were synthesized from BAPP or 6FBAPP and six kinds of commercial aromatic dianhydrides. Copolyimides were prepared by alternative copolycondensation from a pair of dianhydrides of soluble polyimides and insoluble polyimides in certain molar ratios (m1/m2). These copolyimides have excellent organosolubility and good tensile properties, and their thermal properties are outstanding between two corresponding polyimides./

Synthesis of Polyimides and Segmented Block Copolyimides by Transimidization - Published online 20 September 2000 The transimidization reaction has been successfully utilized to prepare a series of segmented block copolyimides from an AX-type amino imide monomer containing the tetrahydro(5)helicene unit. The AX-type amino imide monomer is stable during isolation and purification owing to its inert X (e.g., N-pyridyl) group, but readily underwent a self-transimidization reaction to produce a polyimide or a series of block copolyimides by reaction with commercially available dianhydrides and diamines./

RAPID COMMUNICATION - Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization of 2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl Methacrylate in Aqueous Media - Published online 1 September 2000 - 2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was polymerized by aqueous atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with CuBr/2,2'-bipyridine (Bpy) as a catalyst and methyl a-bromophenylacetate (MBP) as an initiator at room temperature. The resulting poly(D-MAEMA) gave a linear molecular weight/conversion relationship and a narrow molecular weight distribution (weight-average molecular weight/number-average molecular weight - 1.2). Six initiators and two ligands were screened, and MBP/Bpy was the best for the ATRP of DMAEMA in water./

CuI and CuII Salts of Group VIA Elements as Catalysts for Living Radical Polymerization Initiated with Sulfonyl Chlorides - Published online 5 September 2000 - A new class of nonacidic Cu2Y/Bpy and CuY/Bpy catalysts (where Y is O, S, Se, or Te and Bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine) for the living radical polymerization of vinylic monomers initiated from sulfonyl halides is described. A polymerization mechanism based on the in situ generation of the CuCl/CuCl2 pair is suggested. The experimental rate constants of polymerization were higher for the Cu2Y-based catalysts and increased for both the Cu2Y and CuY catalysts in the order Y = O < S < Se < Te./
