Structure and Properties of Halogenated and Non-halogenated Soy-Based Polyols - Published online 12 September 2000 Four polyols used in the manufacture of polyurethanes were synthesized by oxirane ring opening in epoxidized soybean oil with hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid, methanol, and hydrogen. The structures of the polyols were characterized by spectroscopic, chemical, and physical methods. The brominated polyol had 4.1 hydroxy groups, whereas the other three polyols had slightly lower functionality. The densities, viscosities, viscous-flow activation energies, and molecular weights of the polyols were determined./

Effect of Oligomers on the Polymer Diffusion Rate in Poly(butyl methacrylate) Latex Films - Published online 19 September 2000 The influence of oligomer on polymer diffusion in poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) latex films was investigated by the direct energy transfer method. The oligomer was obtained as a byproduct of emulsion polymerization, separated, and added in known amounts to a purified PBMA latex dispersion. Next, latex films were prepared, and in the presence of the oligomeric material, the rate of polymer diffusion in the film was strongly enhanced. The magnitude of the enhancement was fit quantitatively to the Fujita-Doolittle equation, indicating that the oligomers acted like a traditional plasticizer to increase the free volume in the system. All the data were superimposed onto a single master curve./

Synthesis of Central Functionalized Asymmetric Triblock Copolymers for Surface Modification and Switchable Surface Properties - Published online 28 August 2000 - Well-defined central functionalized asymmetric triblock copolymers (CFABC) were designed as a new type of polymer-brush surface modifier with a short central functionalized block that could form chemical bonds with a suitable substrate surface. A combination of sequential living anionic polymerization and polymer modification reactions was used for the synthesis of two CFABCs: Polystyrene-b-poly(4-hydroxystyrene)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (3) and polystyrene-b-poly(4-urethanopropyl triethoxysilylstyrene)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (4). The central block of 3, poly(4-hydroxystyrene), was synthesized with a protected monomer, p-((tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy) styrene, for the polymerization step, and this synthesis was followed by the hydrolysis of the silyl protecting group.
