LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS - Lesions of the Basolateral Amygdala Complex Block Propofol-induced Amnesia for Inhibitory Avoidance Learning in Rats - The inhibitory avoidance memory assessment technique was used to demonstrate in rats that propofol-induced amnesia is blocked with discrete bilateral lesions of the basolateral amygdala complex. This finding, coupled with extensive previous literature, suggests that the amygdala could be a key neuroanatomic site responsible for mediating anesthetic-induced amnesia./

LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS - Mechanisms of Direct Inhibitory Action of Ketamine on Vascular Smooth Muscle in Mesenteric Resistance Arteries - In isolated systemic resistance arteries, ketamine inhibits contractile response to either norepinephrine or KCI, mainly by decreasing the cytosolic free calcium concentration in vascular smooth muscle cells. The decrease in cytosolic free calcium concentration appears to be caused by inhibition of both voltage-gated calcium influx and inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate-induced calcium release from the intracellular stores./
