CARDIOVASCULAR ANESTHESIA (Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists) - A Prospective Randomized Study of the Potential Benefits of Thoracic Epidural Anesthesia and Analgesia in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting - IMPLICATIONS: Many anesthesiologists believe that thoracic epidural anesthesia/analgesia (TEA) is contraindicated for cardiac surgery because of increased risk of paraplegia. However, this large prospective study confirms that perioperative morbidity is significantly less with TEA and suggests that the practical benefits may outweigh the unquantified risk of epidural hematoma./

CARDIOVASCULAR ANESTHESIA (Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists) - Are Leukocytes in Salvaged Washed Autologous Blood Harmful for the Recipient? The Results of a Pilot Study - IMPLICATIONS: Leukocytes contained in intraoperatively processed autologous blood using either heparin or citrate were not activated to the threshold that is associated with leukocyte-mediated tissue injury. This study raises the question of the necessity of special leukocyte filters for the transfusion of intraoperatively salvaged blood./

CARDIOVASCULAR ANESTHESIA - (Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists) - Arterial and Venous Thrombelastograph(R) Variables Differ During Cardiac Surgery - IMPLICATIONS: Thrombelastograph(R) (TEG(R)) values obtained from venous blood samples differ from values obtained from arterial blood samples. When the TEG(R) coagulation analyzer is used for clinical purposes, it is important to be consistent in the blood collection site./

CARDIOVASCULAR ANESTHESIA - (Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists) - BRIEF COMMUNICATION - Can Initial Distribution Volume of Glucose Predict Hypovolemic Hypotension After Radical Surgery for Esophageal Cancer? - IMPLICATIONS: Routine cardiovascular variables immediately after major surgery cannot predict the subsequent hypovolemic hypotension produced by the shift of the extracellular fluid. Glucose dilution using glucose 5 g and a one-compartment model can predict it simply and rapidly./

This in vitro study suggests that cellular contaminant is increased in partially filled cell salvage bowls, although chemical contaminant is less./
