CARDIOVASCULAR ANESTHESIA - (Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists) - Thoracic Epidural Bupivacaine Attenuates Supraventricular Tachyarrhythmias After Pulmonary Resection - IMPLICATIONS: We examined whether postoperative thoracic sympathetic blockade by thoracic epidural bupivacaine after pulmonary resection might reduce the tachyarrhythmias that may result from the relative sympathotonic status produced by injury to the cardiac parasympathetic nerves. The continuous infusion of thoracic epidural bupivacaine was shown to reduce supraventricular tachyarrhythmias./

CARDIOVASCULAR ANESTHESIA - (Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists) - Thromboelastography for Monitoring Prolonged Hypercoagulability After Major Abdominal Surgery - IMPLICATIONS: Postoperative hypercoagulability, occurring for at least 1 wk after major abdominal surgery, may be demonstrated by standard and modified thromboelastography. This hypercoagulability is not reflected by standard coagulation monitoring and seems to be predominantly caused by increased platelet reactivity./

CASE REPORT - Acute Renal Failure After Radiofrequency Liver Ablation of Metastatic Carcinoid Tumor - IMPLICATIONS: We report a case of prolonged radiofrequency liver ablation for metastatic carcinoid tumor complicated by hemolysis, rhabdomyolysis, and transient acute renal failure. Brief radiofrequency liver ablation procedures or those for a small number of tumor sites are not associated with these complications./

CASE REPORT - Anesthesia for Cesarean Delivery in a Pregnant Woman with Acute Hepatic Failure - IMPLICATIONS: A case of reactivation of hepatitis B and development of fulminant hepatic failure in a pregnant hepatitis B virus carrier is reported. Although the occurrence or reactivation of hepatitis B in pregnancy are rare and usually not considered to be medical indications for termination of pregnancy, decisions regarding delivery and liver transplantation must be made if severe hepatic failure develops./

CASE REPORT - Anesthetic Management of Acquired Tracheoesophageal Fistula: A Brief Report - IMPLICATIONS: Tracheoesophageal fistula may be either a congenital lesion or an acquired condition, most often resulting from foreign body ingestion. Location of the lesion has implications for anesthetic management and single lung ventilation may be required to facilitate surgical repair. In pediatric patients, intentional mainstem intubation may be required./

CASE REPORT - Difficult Airway in a Patient with Coffin-Siris Syndrome - IMPUCATIONS: We report on a patient with Coffin-Siris syndrome and consider a potential association between this condition and difficult intubation. Although this inherited condition is extremely rare, anesthesiologists should be aware of its existence and prepare for potential airway management problems whenever it is encountered./
