Intervertebral discs were subjected to three different anular incisions with and without direct surgical repair. Measures of healing strength showed that direct repair of the anulus did not influence the rate or strength of disc healing/

Basic Science - Effects of Anulus Fibrosus and Experimentally Degenerated Nucleus Pulposus on Nerve Root Conduction Velocity: Relevance of Previous Experimental Investigations Using Normal Nucleus Pulposus - Local application of anulus fibrosus to nerve roots had no effect on the nerve conduction velocity, and degenerated nucleus pulposus does not seem to aggravate nucleus pulposus-induced nerve root injury. The use of normal nucleus pulposus therefore may be relevant for evaluating the pathophysiologic mechanisms of nucleus pulposus-induced nerve root injury./

Basic Science - Evaluation of Carriers of Bone Morphogenetic Protein for Spinal Fusion - The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two carriers for bone morphogenetic proteins in lumbar intertransverse process arthrodesis using the rabbit model. Sintered bovine bone and collagen sheet were selected. True Bone Ceramics, with its porous structure, was more effective as a carrier of bone morphogenetic protein than a collagen sheet in achieving the earliest solid fusion./

Basic Science - Expression of Fas Receptor on Disc Cells in Herniated Lumbar Disc Tissue - Disc cells in herniated lumbar disc tissue were stained with Fas receptor, an apoptosis-related protein. The expression of Fas receptor was higher in noncontained discs than in contained discs. Findings in this study indicate that disc cells after herniation may undergo Fas-mediated apoptosis and that the degree of expression of Fas receptor differs, depending on the type of herniation./

Basic Science - Fos Expression in the Rat Brain and Spinal Cord Evoked by Noxious Stimulation to Low Back Muscle and Skin - In the spinal cord, Fos-ir neurons were not observed in lamina II after stimulation of low back muscles. In the brain, Fos-ir neurons were observed in significantly greater numbers in the deep somatic pain group in the accumbens, basolateral nucleus of amygdala, paraventricular hypothalamus, and the ventrolateral periaqueductal gray than in the cutaneous pain group./

Basic Science - Human Intervertebral Disc Cells Are Genetically Modifiable by Adenovirus-Mediated Gene Transfer - Human intervertebral disc cells were cultured in monolayer and treated with adenovirus containing marker genes to determine the susceptibility of the cells to adenovirus, mediated gene transfer. Adenovirus efficiently transferred lacZ and luciferase marker genes to cells from degenerated discs as well as to cells from nondegenerated discs. In vitro transducibility was relatively insensitive to disc degeneration grade./

Basic Science - Immunophenotypic Analysis of the Inflammatory Infiltrates in Herniated Intervertebral Discs - Patterns of progression of spinal deformity in 12 patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) were examined in a retrospective, longitudinal study. Multiple discriminant analysis was conducted to discriminate patients with severe progression of spinal deformity from those with lesser progression using four predictors: 1) vital capacity at the age of 10 years, 2) the age at which ambulation ceased, 3) curve pattern of spinal scoliosis, and 4) Cobb angles of spinal scoliosis at the age of 10 years. Discriminant analysis correctly predicted the severity of the clinical course of 91.7% of the DMD patients. Vital capacity at age 10 was found to be the strongest predictor among the variables./
