Biomechanics - An Ex Vivo Biomechanical Evaluation of an Inflatable Bone Tamp Used in the Treatment of Compression Fracture - Ex vivo compression tests were conducted on osteoporotic cadaveric vertebras subjected to simulated compression fractures and repaired with kyphoplasty (tamp) or standard vertebroplasty. Tamp treatment resulted in significantly more height restoration than vertebroplasty. Both treatments increased strength, but only kyphoplasty restored stiffness./

Biomechanics - Biomechanical Comparison of Five Different Atlantoaxial Posterior Fixation Techniques - Five posterior fixation techniques at C1-C2 were biomechanically compared. The primary objective was to determine whether nonbone graft-dependent one-point reconstructions affords stability equivalent to three-point reconstructions. Three-point reconstructions proved to markedly reduce motion in all planes compared with one- and two-point fixations./

Biomechanics - Biomechanical Comparison of Posterior Cervical Fixation - Biomechanical performance using four different posterior cervical fixation techniques was evaluated in a human cadaver spine. An alternative interspinous fixation technique using a pair of wavy-shaped rods successfully restored the stability of the destabilized motion segment simulating distractive-flexion Stage 3 injury, as compared with standard fixation techniques./

Biomechanics - Biomechanical Effects of Progressive Anterior Cervical Decompression - Anterior column structures in human cadaveric cervical spines were progressively resected to evaluate their contributions to stability and kinematics. Resection of disc, uncovertebral joints, and posterior longitudinal ligament caused varied but significant changes in range of motion, neutral zone, stiffness, axis of rotation, and coupling. Each structure's biomechanical contribution is described./

Biomechanics - Biomechanical Factors Influencing Nuclear Disruption of the Intervertebral Disc - An in vitro study using bovine caudal discs was conducted to quantify factors involved in disc disruption. The risk of nuclear disruption and herniation was found to be strongly associated with high degrees of flexion and hydration, whereas the rate of loading bad no significant influence./

Biomechanics - Canal and Intervertebral Foramen Encroachments of a Burst Fracture: Effects From the Center of Rotation - In fresh cadaveric T11-L3 spine specimens, burst fracture was produced at L1. Pure flexion and extension rotations between T12 and L2 were produced around five different centers of rotation located between the anterior of the L1 vertebral body and the tip of the L1 spinous process. Both the flexion and extension were found to be capable of decreasing the encroachments of the canal and intervertebral foramen area as well as the magnitudes, depending on the location of the center of rotation./

Biomechanics - Cervical Spine Pedicle Screws: A Biomechanical Comparison of Two Insertion Techniques - Human cadaveric cervical spines underwent transpedicular screw fixation by two popular techniques. Biomechanical testing consisting of uniaxial load to failure showed that there was no significant difference between these two methods of screw insertion./

Biomechanics - Comparison Between Sheep and Human Cervical Spines: An Anatomic, Radiographic, Bone Mineral Density, and Biomechanical Study - The purpose of this study was to compare the human cervical spine with the sheep cervical spine to determine whether the sheep spine represents a valid model for the human spine in research. Quantitative anatomic, radiographic, computerized tomograpbic, and biomedical data of the sheep and human cervical spines were evaluated. On the basis of the data obtained in this study, the sheep motion segment C3/4 seemed to be the most, reliable model for the corresponding human motion segment./

Biomechanics - Disc Degeneration: A Human Cadaveric Study Correlating Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Quantitative Discomanometry - This study analyzed disc degeneration of the lumbar spine using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and quantitative discomanometry (QD). The QD parameters correlated well with MRI scores. The QD technique may allow a better understanding of the biomechanical and functional integrity of the endplate-disc-endplate complex/

Biomechanics - Disc Lesions and the Mechanics of the Intervertebral Joint Complex - Mechanical tests on lumbar spines obtained at autopsy were performed to determine correlations between tears in the intervertebral disc and spinal joint mechanical properties. It was found that tear type and size related to altered mechanical properties of motion segments and vertebral body bone integrity./

Biomechanics - Dynamic Cervical Plates: Biomechanical Evaluation of Load Sharing and Stiffness - Presented at the European Cervical Spine Research Society. The stiffness and load-sharing properties of two statically locked cervical plates were compared with two dynamic cervical plates. There were significant differences between the plate constructs under conditions simulating a corpectomy reconstruction with a full-length graft, 10% graft subsidence, and complete graft failure./

Biomechanics - Effect of Endplate Conditions and Bone Mineral Density on the Compressive Strength of the Graft-Endplate Interface in Anterior Cervical Spine Fusion - Destructive compression tests and finite element analyses were conducted to investigate the effect of endplate thickness, end-plate holes, and bone mineral density of the vertebral body on the biomechanical strength of the endplate-graft interface in an anterior cervical spine fusion. Results of this study suggest that it is important to preserve the endplate as much as possible to prevent graft subsidence into the vertebral body, particularly in patients with poor bone quality. It is preferable to make one central bole rather than multiple smaller holes in the endplate for vascularity of the bone graft because it reduces the surface area exposed to fracture stresses./

Biomechanics - Effect of Frozen Storage on the Creep Behavior of Human Intervertebral Discs - The biomechanical properties of the intervertebral disc are generally determined using previously frozen specimens. This study examined the effects of frozen storage on the compressive creep behavior of human discs. Results demonstrate that freezing does not significantly alter the time-dependent response of human lumbar discs./

Biomechanics - Impact Response of the Intervertebral Disc in a Finite-Element Model - A three-dimensional nonlinear poroelastic finite element model of the L3 vertebral body and intervertebral disc was developed to simulate the effect of impact duration or loading rate under vertical impact load. On the basis of increases in parameters such as cancellous core pressure, endplate stresses, and dynamic stiffness under different impact duration, shorter impact duration increases the possibility of fracture in the spinal segment./

Biomechanics - Impaired Postural Control of the Lumbar Spine Is Associated With Delayed Muscle Response Times in Patients With Chronic Idiopathic Low Back Pain - Postural control in unstable sitting and trunk muscle response to a quick force release was studied in patients with low back pain and healthy subjects. Patients showed poorer balance performance, which correlated with delayed muscle response times. This correlation suggests a common underlying pathology in the lumbar spine./
