Biomechanics - Mapping the Structural Properties of the Lumbosacral Vertebral Endplates - Indentation tests were conducted across the surfaces of 62 lumbosacral endplates (L3-S1). Significant variation in the strength and stiffness of the endplates was observed. The more peripheral regions were found to be the strongest. Differences were documented between the strength distributions in the superior lumbar and sacral endplates, the inferior lumbar and sacral endplates, and the superior and inferior lumbar endplates./

Biomechanics - Morphologic Changes in the Lumbar Intervertebral Foramen Due to Flexion-Extension, Lateral Bending, and Axial Rotation: An In Vitro Anatomic and Biomechanical Study - The present study showed that the morphology of the intervertebral foramen of the lumbar spine changed significantly not only on flexion-extension but also on lateral bending and axial rotation. The percent change in cross-sectional foraminal area was correlated with the amount of segmental motion except for extension motions. Further studies are needed to assess the morphologic changes in the intervertebral foramen in vivo and to correlate clinically./

Biomechanics - Notch Sensitivity of Titanium Alloy, Commercially Pure Titanium, and Stainless Steel Spinal Implants - This study demonstrates the decrease in fatigue life of titanium spinal fixation rods when the surface is notched by the French bender or by connecting bolts. Both techniques are unavoidable in many spinal surgeries. Similar techniques did not affect the fatigue life of stainless steel rods. Caution is recommended in the use of titanium for spinal fixation when fatigue life is a concern./

Biomechanics - Prediction of Mechanical Behaviors at Interfaces Between Bone and Two Interbody Cages of Lumbar Spine Segments - A three-dimensional finite element model of human L4-L5 lumbar spine segments with two anterior interbody cages (two thread inserts) was constructed to investigate the mechanical sensitivity at the bone-cage interfaces. The biomechanical evaluation considered various loads combined with a compressive preload on the lumbar spine. This study shows that slip distance and stress at the interfaces are sensitive to the friction coefficient, the bone density, and the loading conditions. A reduction of age-related bone density is less likely to allow bone growth into surface pores of the cage. However, it is likely that the larger the disc area or pedicle diameter, the more stable the interbody fusion of spinal segments./

Biomechanics - S1 Screw Bending Moment With Posterior Spinal Instrumentation Across the Lumbosacral Junction After Unilateral Iliac Crest Harvest - This is a biomechanical study comparing the flexion/extension bending moment within the S1 screw with four long posterior constructs across the lumbosacral junction when only one ilium is available for instrumentation. A significant decrease in the bending moment was observed with the addition of an anterior L5-S1 strut except in the posterior constructs where distal fixation beyond S1 included an iliac bolt and contralateral S2 screw or bilateral S2 screws./

Biomechanics - The Effect of Disc Degeneration and Facet joint Osteoarthritis on the Segmental Flexibility of the Lumbar Spine - Effects of disc degeneration and facet joint osteoarthritis on segmental motion characteristics of the lumbar spine were investigated in male and female specimens. Axial rotational motion was most affected by disc degeneration, and the effects of disc degeneration on the motion were similar between genders. Facet joint osteoarthritis also affected segmental motion, and the influence differed for male and female spines./
