Imaging Lumbar Spinal Stenosis - The entire concept of spinal stenosis is based on the assumption that there is a minimal space necessary for the function of the neural content of the spinal canal, and this space, under certain circumstances, gets too small. This may seem self evident, but it was not until the middle of the previous century that there was sufficient focus on this concept to establish the diagnosis of lumbar spine stenosis./

Imaging of Benign and Malignant Soft Tissue Tumors of the Neck - Soft tissue tumors of the neck are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms arising from adipose, muscular, and fibrous tissue. With the exception of lymphomas, they account for only a small fraction of neck masses. Nevertheless, accurate diagnosis is important since the behavior of these neoplasms differs markedly from each other and from other head and neck masses. Noninvasive imaging, usually with CT and MR imaging, plays an important role in diagnostic evaluation and treatment planning for these tumors. In some cases, imaging features may be suggestive of a single entity. In most cases, imaging is needed to assess the location and extent of the tumor prior to biopsy or excision. This article discusses imaging techniques used for such assessment, the imaging features that help to separate these neoplasms from other head and neck tumors, and the behavior and imaging features of each of the more common benign and malignant sof

Imaging of Child Abuse - Imaging of the skeleton with a variety of modalities plays a critical role in the documentation of child abuse. Skeletal injuries can be grouped according to their relative specificity for abuse. Long bone injuries, rib fractures, and skull fractures predominate in abused children, whereas other rarer skeletal injuries may be highly specific for abuse. Familiarity with differential diagnoses and normal variants and optimal imaging strategies are essential for accurately diagnosing abuse./

Imaging of Cystic Lesions - Cystic masses of the neck include a wide array of developmental lesions. Mimics include necrotic lymphadenopathy and neoplasms. A multimodality imaging approach is necessary for optimal lesion characterization and preoperative planning. Proper assessment requires an analysis of lesion morphology, and an understanding of cross-sectional, compartmental anatomy./

Imaging of Granulomatous Lesions of the Neck in Children - Granulomatous lesions of the neck are common in children and are usually infectious in origin. In the United States, nontuberculous mycobacterial infection accounts for most granulomatous lesion of the neck in immunocompetent children. This article focuses on the following granulomatous disorders: Nontuberculous mycobacterial infection, tuberculosis, cat-scratch disease, tularemia, histoplasmosis, and sarcoidosis./

Imaging of Growth Disturbance in Children - Growth disturbance is frequently post-traumatic, but it also occurs because of other physeal, epiphyseal, and metaphyseal insults. This article discusses the mechanisms of growth disorders and their imaging features that depend more on the anatomic site involved than cause. The article also reviews the process of enchondral ossification and the anatomy of the ends of long bones. An understanding of these topics is essential for accurate interpretation of MR images in children with growth disturbance./

Imaging of Lumbar Degenerative Changes Involving Structures Other Than Disk Space - Degenerative changes in the lumbar spine involve intervertebral disks and intervertebral posterior elements at different extents. Much less attention has been directed toward degenerative changes of the posterior vertebral elements, however, when compared with intervertebral disk degeneration. These changes may involve the apophyseal joints, the bony elements of the neural arch, the intervening soft tissues, and the spinal longitudinal ligament. Roentgenographic, CT, and MR findings in these changes are depicted./

Imaging of Metabolic Bone Disease and Marrow Disorders in Children - This article reviews the clinical features and imaging findings of selected disorders of metabolic bone disease and marrow infiltration in children. Conventional radiographs are the most useful imaging modality for the evaluation of metabolic bone disorders and play a valuable role in the evaluation and management of infiltrative marrow disorders. MR imaging is a useful adjunct to the conventional radiograph. MR imaging is particularly valuable for the detection of marrow infiltration and its complications of infarction and avascular necrosis and now plays an increasing role in the management of these disorders./

Imaging of Musculoskeletal Infections - Musculoskeletal infections occur commonly in children and may involve the bones, joints, supporting soft tissues, and muscle. History and physical examination guide the initial evaluation, which often includes laboratory studies and conventional radiographs. Additional imaging studies are often performed to better define, detect, or diagnose the abnormality, assist with surgical planning, and assess treatment response. This article reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and the clinical and imaging presentations of musculoskeletal infections in children./
