Basic Science - Direct Current Electrical Stimulation Increases the Fusion Rate of Spinal Fusion Cages - Direct current (DC) stimulation of interbody fusion cages was evaluated in a sheep model. A minimum of seven sheep each received a BAK cage loaded with autograft at L4-L5 with currents of 0, 40, and 100 iA applied by a DC stimulator. DC stimulation increased the histologic and biomechanical fusion rate and the speed of healing of the cages at 4 months./

Basic Science - Human Intervertebral Disc Cells Are Genetically Modifiable by Adenovirus-Mediated Gene Transfer - Human intervertebral disc cells were cultured in monolayer and treated with adenovirus containing marker genes to determine the susceptibility of the cells to adenovirus, mediated gene transfer. Adenovirus efficiently transferred lacZ and luciferase marker genes to cells from degenerated discs as well as to cells from nondegenerated discs. In vitro transducibility was relatively insensitive to disc degeneration grade./
