ECONOMICS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Female Nurse Anesthetists Versus Operating Room Nurses: Prevalence, Laterality, and Impact of Handedness - IMPLICATIONS: Repetitive stress injuries have now exceeded back injuries as the most commonly reported workplace injuries in the United States. Female nurse anesthetists may face greater occupational risks for developing left hand and bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome than female operating room nurses./

ECONOMICS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH - Cost Identification Analysis for Succinylcholine - IMPLICATIONS: The true cost of succinylcholine is more than 20 times the acquisition cost of the drug. The estimated cost is very sensitive to the risk and cost of patients dying or sustaining brain injury from anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions to succinylcholine./

ECONOMICS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH - CRITICAL CARE AND TRAUMA - A Comparison of the Endotracheal Tube and the Laryngeal Mask Airway as a Route for Endobronchial Lidocaine Administration - IMPLICATIONS: Drug absorption after lidocaine administration into the laryngeal mask airway is not sufficient to achieve therapeutic lidocaine plasma concentrations. IV drug administration should be used whenever the laryngeal mask is used in the cardiac arrest setting./

ECONOMICS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH - CRITICAL CARE AND TRAUMA - The Effects of Endogenous and Exogenous Vasopressin During Experimental Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - IMPLICATIONS: The study was designed to assess the role of endogenous versus exogenous vasopressin in a porcine cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) model. Only pigs with effective endogenous vasopressin, of pigs with effective endogenous vasopressin and administration of exogenous vasopressin had good left ventricular myocardial blood flow during experimental CPR, had return of spontaneous circulation after defibrillation and survived the 1-h postresuscitation phase./

ECONOMICS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH - Examining the Evidence in Anesthesia Literature: A Critical Appraisal of Systematic Reviews - IMPLICATIONS: The quality of systematic reviews relating to perioperative medicine was examined systematically and found to be similar in quality to those in other specialties. Adoption of recently published criteria on writing and methods could further improve this type of literature./

ECONOMICS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH - GENERAL ARTICLES - Both Cerebral GABA Receptors and Spinal GABAA Receptors Modulate the Capacity of Isoflurane to Produce Immobility - IMPLICATIONS: In rats, cerebral raminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptors, in addition to spinal GABA receptors, influence the immobilizing action of isoflurane but are probably not responsible for that action./

ECONOMICS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH - GENERAL ARTICLES - Dose-Response Characteristics of Midazolam for Reducing Diaphragmatic Contractility - IMPLICATIONS: Midazolam is used as a sedative and anesthetic. It reduces, in a dose-dependent manner, the diaphragmatic contractility in dogs./

ECONOMICS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH - GENERAL ARTICLES - Local GABAA Receptor Blockade Reverses Isoflurane's Suppressive Effects on Thalamic Neurons In Vivo - IMPLICATIONS: Isoflurane actions in the thalamus suppressed the transmission of tactile input to the cortex. This effect was reversed by removal of thalamic inhibition. Suppression of sensory perception under general anesthesia, therefore, may result in part from isoflurane's interaction with thalamic g-aminobutyric acid-A receptors./

ECONOMICS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH - GENERAL ARTICLES - Multimodal Perioperative Management -- Combining Thoracic Epidural Analgesia, Forced Mobilization, and Oral Nutrition -- Reduces Hormonal and Metabolic Stress and Improves Convalescence After Major Urologic Surgery - IMPLICATIONS: In patients undergoing radical cystectomy, a multimodal approach combining continuous epidural analgesia, enforced mobilization, and oral nutrition should be used to speed recovery after major urologic surgery./
