LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS - Flow Modulation of Pressure-sensitive Tone in Rat Pial Arterioles: Role of the Endothelium - In isolated pial arterioles, perfusion increased the threshold pressure for smooth muscle activation, and active tone was maintained at higher transmural pressures than in vessels studied in the absence of flow. This interaction may be important in preserving cerebral perfusion and stabilizing transcapillary fluid flux during fluctuations in systemic arterial pressure./

Halothane also suppressed the accumulation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate content and the expression of induced nitric oxide synthase messenger RNA and protein evoked by interleukin 1b in rat vascular smooth muscle./

LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS - Inhibitory Effects of Barbiturates on Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors in Rat Central Nervous System Neurons - The authors found that thiopental and convulsant and depressant isomers of a barbiturate all inhibit native nAchRs in rat medial habenula neurons. The results suggest that inhibition of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in these neurons is not directly relevant to the hypnotic or anticonvulsive actions of barbiturates./
