LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS - Direct Neurotoxicity of Tetracaine on Growth Cones and Neurites of Growing Neurons In Vitro - Short-term exposure to tetracaine and bupivacaine produced irreversible changes in growing neurons. Growth cones were quickly affected, and neurites degenerated subsequently./

LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS - Disposition of Bupivacaine and Its Metabolites in the Maternal, Placental, and Fetal Compartments in Rats - Maternally administered bupivacaine becomes undetectable in both maternal and fetal blood within 4 h, whereas its major metabolite in the rat, 3'-hydroxybupivacaine, remains in the maternal and fetal tissues. Bupivacaine and 3'-hydroxybupivacaine significantly accumulate in the placenta and amnion./

LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS - Effect of Drugs Used for Neuropathic Pain Management on Tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ Currents in Rat Sensory Neurons - Depolarized resting membrane potential and repetitive stimulation has little effect on current amplitude of tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ channels but renders the channels highly sensitive to the use-dependent blockers lidocaine, mexiletine, and amitriptyline./

LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS - Effect of Increasing Perfluorocarbon Dose on VA/Q Distribution during Partial Liquid Ventilation in Acute Lung Injury - During partial liquid ventilation in acute lung injury, inert gas shunt began to decrease at a relatively small perfluorocarbon dose. The majority shunt units were converted to units showing low VA/Q ratios rather than normal VA/Q ratios at all tested doses. The presence of considerable amount of low VA/Q units across the varying doses of perfluorocarbon suggested that additional measures are necessary during partial liquid ventilation to augment its the effect on gas exchange./
