Occupational Health/Ergonomics - A Longitudinal Study of the Development of Low Back Pain in an Industrial Population - A 2-year longitudinal study was conducted to identify factors that may predispose an industrial worker to low back pain. A total of eight variables from a battery of physical, psychosocial, and lifting measures was able to predict low back pain with a 75% correct prediction rate. Results confirmed the multifactorial nature of low back pain and suggested that personal fitness is an important defense against low back pain, even in manual materials handling jobs./

Occupational Health/Ergonomics - Effect of Age on Outcomes of Tertiary Rehabilitation for Chronic Disabling Spinal Disorders - To determine the effect of age on rehabilitation outcomes for chronically disabled spinal disorder patients, 1-year outcome interviews, physical capacity tests, and psychosocial questionnaires were analyzed. The study identified a linear association between advancing years in the working-age population and declining rates of work return and age-adjusted physical capacities. Older workers had linearly increased pretreatment disability duration and surgical treatment, accompanied by post-treatment increase in health utilization and self-reported pain and disability./
