Occupational Health/Ergonomics - Intramuscular Myoelectric Activity and Selective Coactivation of Trunk Muscles During Lateral Flexion With and Without Load - Using intramuscular electromyographic recordings from eight muscles surrounding the lumbar spine, the pattern of muscle activation was established in response to different degrees of lateral trunk flexion and to a handbeld load./

Occupational Health/Ergonomics - Response of the Flexion-Relaxation Phenomenon Relative to the Lumbar Motion to Load and Speed - Times of occurrence of electrical silence of erector spinae muscles during slow and fast trunk flexion, with and without load, were related to lumbar spine flexion-extension, as measured with an external motion monitor. Fast trunk flexion relatively increased lumbar spine flexion time and delayed appearance of silence. Load had no influence./

Occupational Health/Ergonomics - The In Vivo Dynamic Response of the Human Spine to Rapid Lateral Bend Perturbation: Effects of Preload and Step Input Magnitude - In this study, 13 men experienced lateral bend step inputs comprising 20% or 30% of their maximum lateral bend moment while sustaining isometric preloads of 5% or 15%. Higher levels of preactivation attenuated lateral flexion. When preactivation was low, the antagonistic muscles demonstrated more pronounced responses to added loads. Large multisegmental muscles appear to make a significant contribution to spinal stability./

Occupational Health/Ergonomics - Timing of Activation of the Erector Spinae and Hamstrings During a Trunk Flexion and Extension Task - Lumbar angular displacement and electromyographic activity of the hamstrings and the thoracolumbar erector spinae were recorded during trunk flexion-extension. The flexion relaxation response was pervasive in the lumbar erector spinae during flexion but was less consistent in the hamstrings and thoracic region. Extensor muscle recruitment progressed in a caudad-to-cephalad direction during extension./
