Political Inscription, Artistic Reflection: A Recontextualization of Contemporary Viennese-Jewish Literature - The essay undertakes a historical and cultural recontextualization of present-day Vienna's Jewish literary scene in order to supplement the critical literature on the phenomenon. In so doing, it attempts to locate contemporary Austrian-Jewish literary formations in the larger frames underwriting their emergence, post-war Austria's modes of Vergangenheitsbewltigung, the Waldheim affair, and the new Jewish visibility foremost among them. Mobilizing literary texts in the interest of larger historical arguments, the essay suggests in conclusion that contemporary Viennese-Jewish literature marks a transition from modernity to postmodernity in Austrian-Jewish existence./

Post-Shoah Jewish Culture in Germany and Austria: An Introduction - The introduction to this special GQ issue sketches the parameters of the topic of a symposium held at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It also delineates the many-layered issues involved and presents contemporary -- Often conflicting -- Voices on Jewish post-Shoah life and culture in Germany. Further, it presents highlights from a lengthy discussion with the panel and the audience which included an exchange on how best to transmit an accurate picture of Jewish life in German-speaking countries. The need for a multi-disciplinary approach was favored, as reliance on high literature alone might lead to a distorted view. Any contemporary definition of the term "Jewish" needs to take into consideration the ambivalence of the concept in today's Germany and Austria and the processes that have shaped Jewish life and writing in post-Shoah Central Europe/
