Randomized Trial - Periradicular Infiltration for Sciatica: A Randomized Controlled Trial - Periradically injected corticosteroids seem to have only short-term effects for sciatica. At three months and six months after injection, there seems to exist a 'rebound' phenomenon in the steroid group./

Randomized Trial - Radiofrequency Facet Joint Denervation in the Treatment of Low Back Pain: A Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial to Assess Efficacy - A controlled trial randomized 70 chronic low back pain patients to two treatment groups: Radiofrequency articular facet denervation or sham therapy. Although radiofrequency facet joint denervation may provide some short-term improvement in functional disability among patients with chronic low back pain, the efficacy of this treatment has not been established./

Randomized Trials - A Randomized Clinical Trial of Exercise and Spinal Manipulation for Patients With Chronic Neck Pain - A randomized trial involving 191 patients with chronic neck pain was conducted. The patients were observed for 1 year after treatment. In the long term, the use of strengthening exercise, whether in combination with spinal manipulation or in the form of a high-technology MedX program, appears to be more beneficial than the use of spinal manipulation alone./

Randomized Trials - Helping Patients Decide About Back Surgery: A Randomized Trial of an Interactive Video Program - The impact of an interactive video program on knowledge about treatment options for the lumbar spine was evaluated in a randomized trial of 100 potential surgical candidates. Compared with patients who received only a booklet about back pain, patients who viewed the videodisc had better gains in knowledge and rated aspects of the educational materials more highly./

Randomized Trials - Prospective Randomization of Parenteral Hyperalimentation for Long Fusions With Spinal Deformity: Its Effect on Complications and Recovery From Postoperative Malnutrition - Total parenteral nutrition was administered in a prospective, randomized fashion to 46 patients undergoing long spinal fusions. Despite the absence of statistical reduction in complications, patients who received total parenteral nutrition had less nutritional depletion and a more rapid return to preoperative nutritional status than those who did not receive such nutrition. Patients who underwent staged circumferential reconstructions with the administration of total parenteral nutrition experienced less nutritional depletion and a lower complication rate than patients undergoing same-day reconstructions with or without total parenteral nutrition./
