Radiologic Assessment of Lumbar Intervertebral Instability and Degenerative Spondylolisthesis - Despite many efforts, there is no clear and widely accepted definition of lumbar instability because there are no unquestionable and currently applicable clinical or radiologic criteria available for this entity This article reviews the current concepts of lumbar instability and the different imaging modalities used to make the diagnosis as evident as possible./

Reconstruction of the Voice after Laryngectomy - Modern esophageal reconstruction usually achieved satisfactory results. Vocal reconstruction and rehabilitation, however, are still far from perfect. Fortunately, they are being improved progressively. Tracheo-esophageal puncture with a voice prosthesis, neoglottis, and voice tube shunts can be applied in addition to esophageal voice, artificial larynx, and various voice devices. With the possibility of vocal restoration, patients are more ready to accept laryngectomy when it is necessary. In the meantime, surgeons are more radical in tumor ablation so as to minimize the possibility of local recurrence./

Role of Laparoscopy in the Staging of Malignant Disease - The staging of carcinoma is of paramount importance in planning treatment approaches for localized and advanced disease. It is imperative to identify accurately those patients with a potentially resectable, localized tumor and those patients with advanced disease or distant metastases. Current preoperative staging modalities are consistently inaccurate, resulting in a disparity between the results of preoperative investigations and findings at laparotomy. The combined benefits of staging laparoscopy and laparoscopic ultrasonography help dictate the selection of curative or palliative procedures in the cancer patient/

The Role of Selective Sentinel Lymph Node Dissection in Breast Cancer - Axillary nodal status continues to be the most statistically significant predictor of survival for patients with breast cancer. Although still providing regional control of axillary disease, axillary dissection is more important as a staging and prognostic tool. Trials are currently underway to investigate the possibility of replacing the current standard treatment of breast cancer, axillary lymph node dissection, with the less invasive lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node biopsy. This issue and the technical aspects of sentinel lymph node mapping for breast cancer are discussed in detail in this article./

The Role of Sentinel Lymph Nodes in Malignant Melanoma - Selective sentinel lymph node dissection should be considered a standard approach in the treatment of primary malignant melanoma. With the combination of blue dye and radioisotope mapping, the sentinel lymph nodes (SLNS) can be harvested with pinpoint accuracy. This article compares blue dye and radioisotope mapping techniques. Based on the clinical outcome data of selective sentinel lymph node dissection, micrometastasis to the SLNs carries a poor prognosis for patients with primary invasive melanoma/
