Antienterococcal Antibiotics - The spread of enterococci as a major cause of nosocomial infections and the increasing resistance of these organisms to all currently available antibiotics, including glycopeptides, has rendered therapy of these infections particularly difficult. Mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents are now understood to a significant extent. Therapeutic regimens are often based on the results of experimental studies but most often have not been validated by large clinical trials. The main options for the treatment of infection caused by susceptible and resistant enterococci, using commercially available or new therapeutic agents, are reviewed here./
